The Agnes S. Andreae Preserve
Koehler Township, Cheboygan County

In 1983, Agnes S. Andreae donated the original 27-acre preserve to the Little Traverse Conservancy. Mrs. Andreae received the property from her mother, Agnes Shedd, who purchased the land from a power company around 1920. The Conservancy purchased adjacent land tracts bringing the preserve’s size to 111 acres of land that runs along more than a mile of Pigeon River. The preserve also lies adjacent to protected land with a reserved life estate which includes an additional 2.9 miles of river frontage.

The original small cabin on the property was built in 1908 by a man named Will Martin. Several improvements to the cabin were made by the Andreae family who also constructed a new bridge, replacing the original wooden bridge that had washed away years prior. Agnes Andreae’s mother referred to the cabin as “Pigeon Cote” and treasured it for years as a retreat. Today, the Conservancy allows scout and other community groups to use it for outings, fulfilling a wish made by the donor, Agnes Andreae.
