This spring the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation awarded a $600,000 grant for the protection of the US-31 corridor. The grant will be used to protect the scenic beauty of this highway corridor from Petoskey through Charlevoix and south to Acme. In a cooperative effort, the Little Traverse Conservancy and the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy have teamed up to protect this scenic roadway. The views of Lake Michigan along US-31 are spectacular and the northern hardwoods and cedar swamp forests that line the roadway define what it is to be "up North." The grant will be used to purchase development rights and/or to purchase lands along the corridor. The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation was established by Mrs. Grace A. Dow in 1936 in memory of her husband Dr. Herbert H. Dow, founder of the Dow Chemical Company. The income of the trust is to be used "for religious, charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes for public benefit of the inhabitants of the City of Midland and of the people of the State of Michigan." "We can’t thank the Foundation enough for their generosity and for their support of the work we do in northwestern Michigan," said Tom Lagerstrom, associate director of the Little Traverse Conservancy.
