Burt Lake Shoreline Protected

The Conservancy has finalized negotiations with the state of Michigan to complete a sale and transfer of more than 20 acres of land recently protected along Burt Lake. Last year, staff worked with Conservancy Trustee Tucker Harris and other members of the Burt Lake Preservation Association to secure and protect this property that was highly desirable for development. A fundraising campaign successfully raised funds to cover the costs of purchasing the land. Any proceeds remaining after the sale to the state will be used to assist Tuscarora Township’s efforts to purchase parkland in Indian River.

With 2,000 feet of shoreline, the parcel lies on a small peninsula between Maple Bay and Bullhead Bay and is a popular stop for water recreationists. In addition, the land is surrounded by 1,400 acres of state land, contributing to high quality wildlife habitat.

"Because of its remote location, yet widespread recreational use, state ownership seemed to make the best sense for this property," said land protection specialist, Ty Ratliff. The land was the only privately-held parcel within two miles of undeveloped lake frontage, and especially important for aquatic shoreline species.
