Sleepy Hollow Nature Preserve

The 55 acre Sleepy Hollow Nature Preserve was donated to the Little Traverse Conservancy in 1980 by an anonymous donor. There is a small parking area and more than one mile of trail suitable for walking.

A beautiful spring fed creek flows through the lowland and empties into the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. A cedar swamp is located along both sides of the creek throughout its length in the preserve.

The forest is mostly hardwoods, dominated by sugar maple, american beech and ash. The preserve also has many woodland wildflowers, numerous mushrooms, ferns, mosses, and lichens. Deer, mink, porcupine, red fox, snowshoe hare and other animals may be found here.

Large tree stumps with fire scars scattered throughout the preserve stand as testimony to the past logging days. A beautiful stand of northern hardwoods covers much of the preserve, but it is second growth. Through its preservation, future generations may be able to appreciate the glory of the forest as it was before the settlers arrived.

Directions: Take M-66 south of Charlevoix to Sleepy Hollow Lane, which is opposite Phelps Road. Turn left onto Sleepy Hollow Lane, parking area is about 1/8 mile on the left.
