These two parks were purchased through the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and offer a variety of uses to the general public. The East Park has 2500 feet of Lake Michigan frontage, much of which has been reclaimed from its previous state as cement kiln dust piles. A non-motorized trail will provide access to nature foot trails, scenic overlooks, and a bridge across a small coastal brook. An additional foot path will provide access to Bay Harbor Lake. The shoreline of both parks will provide fishing access to the bay and the small stream, a local steelhead hotspot. The East Park provides a boat launch for a small outboard or canoe.
The West Park, in contrast, is designed for more passive recreation with longer wood chipped trails, steeper grades, an observation deck, and interpretive information on the natural and cultural history of Little Traverse Bay. This park provides access to Lake Michigan with approximately 600 feet of frontage. A large portion of the West Park consists of wetlands that will be highlighted by an observation overlook. These trails will allow for a myriad of uses, including hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and wheel chair access. Completion of these facilities is expected to be in 1998.
Directions: From Petoskey take U.S. 31 South to Bay Harbor. The East Park is located off Quarry Road. The West Park is accessible from County Line Road.
